History & Literature encourages students to take courses across a wide variety of departments and disciplines, so concentrators choose a field of study to ensure that their plan of study has coherence and depth. There are seven fields of study in the concentration, each focused on a different theme, period, or place in world history and literature:

- [American Studies](/american-studies)
- [Ethnic Studies](/ethnic-studies)
- [European Studies](/european-studies)
- [Latin American Studies](/latin-american-studies)
- [Urban Studies](https://histlit.fas.harvard.edu/urban-studies-)
- [Modern World](/modern-world)
- [World Before 1800](/early-modern-world)
- [Medieval World](/medieval-world)

In addition to the 8 courses required for each field, all concentrators complete 1 course that satisfies the [Language Requirement](/language-requirement) and 5 History & Literature tutorials: [Sophomore Tutorial](/sophomore) (spring); [Junior Tutorial](/junior) (fall and spring); [Senior Tutorial](/senior) (fall and spring).

To allow plenty of time for academic advising and intellectual exploration, concentrators do not choose a field until the end of the sophomore year.

## What is a Field of Study?

History & Literature’s field structure provides the intellectual scaffolding to ensure that your individualized plan of study has breadth as well as depth. The fields also foster a sense of community among concentrators studying similar themes, regions, and periods.
