Mimi Thi Nguyen will give a Fall 2018 Distinguished Lecture in History & Literature

Mimi Thi Nguyen is Associate Professor of Gender and Women's Studies and Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her first book, The Gift of Freedom: War, Debt, and Other Refugee Passages, which won the Outstanding Book Award in Cultural Studies from the Association of Asian American Studies, focuses on the promise of “giving” freedom concurrent and contingent with waging war. She also published (with co-editor with Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu) Alien Encounters: Pop Culture in Asian America, which analyzes Aasian Americans' interactions with popular culture as both creators and consumers.
