Humanities 7

HUM 7 introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of cultural materials in their historical contexts. Open to all undergraduate students, HUM 7 satisfies the sophomore tutorial requirement in History and Literature.

Weekly lectures are given by members of History and Literature's Committee on Degrees and other members of the faculty from departments such as AAAS, AFVS, English, History, RLL, and WGS. Each lecture focuses on a different type of source (such as fiction, music, visual art, and oral histories), approaching each text from key theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Following the lecture, small-group tutorials study other related texts and model scholarly uses of the material. Tutorials are small-group, hands-on, student-centered discussions that immerse students in the rigorous and rewarding work of interdisciplinary scholarship. Some weeks might pair the primary source with a piece of key social theory; other weeks might include exemplary contemporary cultural criticism. Tutorial meetings feature trips to campus museums, archives, and performances.
